If, like me, you are of the opinion that a “good hunt” is defined as either a” one-shot kill” (ideal) or a “one + followup shot kill” (more common), then there is no reason why this rifle would not get your pulse moving at a higher rate of knots.
It’s the Brno ZH 344 double rifle, in Kim’s favorite hunting caliber of 7x75mm Mauser:
And it’s a little out of the ordinary, compared to a “regular” hunting rifle:
Now, given the above scenario, the double rifle is probably the optimal choice for hunting, in that you can get that second shot off with blinding speed if you have to (one reason why professional hunters love double rifles so).
Now, I know that you can get a second shot off just as quickly with a semi-auto rifle, of course, but that’s so… modern. Hell, for that matter, you could also use a more “modern” cartridge than the 1890s-era 7x57mm too, but why should you, when it’s probably the best “medium” cartridge ever made? (I know, in African terms it’s a “light” cartridge, but still.)
In this particular rifle’s case, I don’t know about that Burris scope—a short-range scope is okay, I suppose, on a dangerous game double rifle (mostly not, though), but while the 7mm Mauser is a fine cartridge, it’s not that. So I would have thought that an older Zeiss 4x optic would be a better choice for the money, but let me not quibble.
It is a gorgeous rifle, and one which got my juices flowing a lot quicker than most others I’ve seen recently.
The fact that it’s an old Brno (now CZ) makes it even more desirable.
