I was browsing through the German press as part of Teutonic Week, when I happened on this little snippet from Der Spiegel:
Berlin has warmly welcomed the election of Barack Obama. Now diplomats are busy preparing for a more active German foreign policy. But amid all the euphoria there’s concern Germany may be asked to send more troops to Afghanistan.
Just thinking aloud, here, but a random thought did occur to me, and it might be a way for Germany to overcome two problems with one action (cue Germanic mania for efficiency here): reinstate the draft, and then send everyone with a Turkish-sounding name to serve in Afghanistan.
After all, they could communicate better with the locals in Afghanistan than ordinary Germans could, and they’d be treated better by the Afghans because they’re mostly fellow-Muslims.
For the people obsessed with rasverein, it gets Turks out of the Reich Fatherland… and if the Afghans were to slaughter the Turks, that might be viewed in some circles as a feature, not a bug.
I know, I know… it’s just hyperbole, the modern-day Krauts would never do anything like that.
But you have to admit the irony in Germany not wanting to send its soldiers to fight in foreign countries…
