“And so, it has come to this.”

November 29, 2008
11:01 PM CST

Those were the words with which Johnny Carson started to wrap up his last Tonight Show, and they work for me, too.

As a writer, it should be easy for me to find the words, fitting words which suit the situation, but I have to tell you, after six years and countless thousands of words, it’s still not easy.

What gives me the greatest joy of all, in all this, is that my beloved wife Connie will no longer have to keep this bucket of bits and bytes running, and can spend more time doing the things she loves than putting up with the thankless role of Tech Support. People often say that “without so-and-so, none of this would have been possible” and their words ring hollow; well, in my case, that’s literally true. Without her, this magnificent website would have been a series of text pieces on BlogSpot or whatever, and to her go all the plaudits for what this site ever was. (Her farewell is here.)

It would be great to offer words of exhortation for we few, we happy band of conservatives, to continue to take the fight to the socialists: but to be honest, I really don’t have those words, anymore. Besides, I’ve said all that so many times before that anything I say now would just be redundant.

Somebody wrote to me and said, very graciously, that he now knows how people felt when Albert Jay Nock passed away. While that’s all very flattering, I am not fit to fill Nock’s pen, let alone be an heir to his astonishing legacy of thoughtful, philosophical and intellectual discourse. And I suspect that, like Nock, my writings will fade into obscurity, with only occasional memories thereof that might linger in the consciousness of a small few.

And that’s fine. From the very beginning, my philosophy on this website has been to say what makes sense to me. And, like Nock, I’ve said that all those who agree may stay awhile, while all those who don’t, may pass by. And it appears that more than a few agreed: over 15 million visits to this site will not be denied.

Some people have asked me to recommend a “surrogate”, an alternative website to visit so they may get their daily “fix”. To which I reply: “Of what?” Just because I combined discussion and pictures of guns, politics, beautiful women, culture, and all the other things which give me pleasure in this world, that doesn’t mean that none of that exists out there, in places dedicated to their specifics. The supermarket may close, but that does not negate the fare offered by the bakery, the butchery and the wine store—one just has to go from one to the other—and the fare is just as good, if not better.

None of that is important. My thoughts on all the above were never posted as anything definitive—hell, most 18-year-old gun owners know better than I how their guns work, for example—and it’s probably a good thing that my fairly-superficial discussion of the topics I covered will now give way to writers who know more about their topic than I ever would.

And that’s all there is to it.

Now it’s time to close off my back porch to visitors, and turn it back into a family room. Thank you all for sharing this place and time with me, and thank you all for the support you’ve shown me, all these years. Comments to this post will be open until midnight, and then the door will close. My very best wishes to you all.

And now, if you’ll excuse me…

Kim

  1. Thanks again for a nice job, well done.

I wish I had something witty or some wisdom to give you but about all I can come up with are, “THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES”.

Now get on with it and go have a great life.

  9. Thank you very much for your posts. This website gave me a different outlook on politics and real life. I voted for McCain when I wouldn’t have and I will own a handgun when my age permits. This website has been invaluable to me and I only wish that I had noticed some time earlier.

Enjoy the rest of your real life.

  10. I almost succumbed to the temptation to quote the off-key Frank about how you did it your way, just to wind you up one more time. But that wouldn’t be fair and might take away from my sincere thanks. You truly have lived up to the highest Reithian principles - inform, educate and entertain - for which inspiration I am very grateful.

  14. I cannot properly express how grateful I am to have found this site, and for having been privileged to read it and the others and to interact with the fine people your excellent character and hard work (and that of your wife) caused to gather here. It’s like watching anyone you greatly admire and are fond of retire, I suppose. You may know he deserves it, but your desire for the value and reinforcement of The Good that he brought, which will no longer be available, remains. Heck, I was still hoping that The Shooting Trail show would return and get syndicated until you announced your retirement.

Thank you for your signal service and kindnesses. I will miss you dearly, even though I’ve never had the good fortune to meet you.

  15. Godspeed, Kim. And blessings on you and your family. You have been a source of information, a conversation partner, a guide and a source of inspiration. I expect my Curio & Relic license any day from the BATFE and will soon start collecting my firearms in earnest. And it would not have happened without you. I am getting a concealed weapon permit, which also would not have happened without you. I have put considerable thought into my personal disaster preparation, which could someday save the life of me and my family, and I was spurred on to do this by you.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

I don’t agree with everything that’s appeared here--how could anyone, what with the discussions--but it’s been a pleasure to read your lucid, intelligent writing. I will keep you--and The Mrs.--in my bookmarks, for you both have reams of knowledge that I will wish to reference again and again.

I so-o-o-o-o agree with so much of what you present, and so-o-o-o detest some of the things you champion - yet I would be delighted to meet you and provide humble hospitality should you make the trip to the Antipodes.

That’s something I’ve really admired about your blog - the (mostly) civilised way present yourself and your views, however much I may not have liked the views.

  22. Kim-

It’s been too brief a pleasure, having your blog to read these past four, maybe five years or so.

Thank you, and Connie, for the thought-provoking essays, the pictures of beautiful guns, fine women, classic cars and faraway places, the reports of RCOBs and Righteous Shootings, and the camaraderie of the forums.

I wish you well in your post-blog retirement.

  24. Best of luck to you and your family.  I will miss my daily fix.  I will miss the memories that come flooding back when you post pics of snow-covered European streets, the red clouds that obscure my vision until driven away by the sight of yet another lovely woman… er… gun.  Will anyone step up and fill the void?  Even though there are many who collectively address the same issues, nobody manages to bring them together quite like you, so I say therefore, not likely.  Go then, and enjoy Real Life (TM).

  26. Sorry to see you go.  I have enjoyed your writing very much and you have certainly made me think at times.

Of course you know that when Robert Heinlein tried to give up ‘the silly business of writing’ he became ill.  The only cure for him was to start writing again and he said that his ‘fix’ took more and more of his time as he got older.

Anyway, this Englishman hopes that you will satisfy your own desires but, if you do find you have to start writing again, I am afraid that I am selfish enough to be happy about it.

    Best wishes

You have been a significant part of my life for some years now, a daily read, a stolen witty quote, a point of view so well expressed.

  34. Well Kim the day has come and most unwelcome it is too.

So many here have said it all so well, I feel as though they’ve written my thoughts for me.  And especially #22.  It has been too brief a pleasure.

You and the Mrs. have been a team as you remind us. So much thanks to your wonderful wife as well.  You couldn’t keep a site like this up without some darn good super tech support.

Having said that, and I think Connie would agree, it has been your insight and commentary, your ability as a wordsmith and your devotion to your cause that has been a glue that has held this place together.

You and Connie also brought something else here and that’s class.

So I guess for the last time, Thank You Kim and Connie for all your work, and bringing so much to the blog world.

    Most Sincerely,

Ill state my case, of which Im certain.

  46. Started reading your (old)site when I was in Jordan.  I remember when you stopped for a while before bringing up the new one.

Hard times are coming again, I say, hard times.

This site has been a great place to hangout and look over your shoulder and the shoulders of all your web-friends.  My department head is going to really wonder why my productivity has suddenly gone up(with ~200 days until I’m thrown out the door).  Fortunately she’s not a suspicious woman.

Pretend you are a a pseudo-Frenchman during your European travels.  It’ll confuse the hell out of the real ones as well as any Americans you meet, heh..
Thanks again for the great run and for occasionally educating this old f**t .

  47. Kim,

I truly will miss this site, this little corner of civility on the internet. Since this has been your last post I will be arrogant enough to take the last word. Your site really has had a great effect on many including me, and will certainly be irreplaceable. I also notice that you never declared an end to American week, and whether that was intentional or not I know that American week continues on because it can be stopped by no person. To me, that will be the legacy of your writings.

  49. Kim and Connie,

This is a bittersweet day, feels like when someone retired from the AF when I was on active duty.  Happy for the retiree to be able to enjoy some time with family and away from the stressful routine after years of faithful service.  Sad that I won’t have you guys around on a daily basis.

Thank you for all both of you have done for society in general, the Nation Of Riflemen concept in particular, and for me specifically. You’ve encouraged me to try out some new things through your writings, challenged my world view and assumptions (I may still hold them, but you made me look at them to ensure they were valid) and I will never forget Connie’s kind words when my Dad passed away.

Kim is the embodiment of the truth that some our finest citizens weren’t born here, thus reinforcing that “America” and being an “American” is not about a place of residence or accident of birth, but about ideals and a concept of how civilized people can, and should, live together.

Good luck to both of you and your family wherever life takes you.  If you are ever in my neighborhood, please drop me a line.

    Best regards

  54. Kim,
Like you I’m having trouble finding the words, but I’ll do my feeble best:

Over the last few years a frequent topic of conversation in my house has been something you’ve written.  Like others, I first found you thru your “pussification” essay and stayed around.

I’ve learned a lot from being here.  I’ve learned that I’m not the last Conservative in the world.  I’ve learned that others share my love for old guns.  I’ve learned that others believe there’s a way to behave, and more importantly a way NOT to behave, and that those rules exist for a reason.  I’ve learned that sometimes a smart, intelligent, gentle man MUST be enraged at what happens around him, and that such rage is a good thing.

I’ve learned that it’s OK to disagree on the details (like whether we’d rather have a Garand or an AK-47 if the SHTF) as long as we agree on the big picture (like it’s vital to have a gun).

I’ve learned that the Western Canon is a body of work that I won’t live long enough to mine completely, that I’ll be like Isaac Newton who likened himself to a man walking on the beach picking up little shells of knowledge while the vast ocean remains unexplored a few yards away.  Still, while I may never finish it, I have started it and will continue to explore it.

I’m sorry to see you go, but I’m glad you’ll now be able to do more of the things you love with the people you love.

    Best of everything Kim.

Live free, die well, and do as you wish until then. Know that there is a table for you and yours in the warriors banquet in Valhalla.
I have permalinked this post at my site. Good God, I will miss you.

  61. Kim & Connie,

The Decommissioning of a Ship of the Line is a thing not untertaken lightly or without a great and somber apprecation.

Years of service, countless tens of thousands of topics under the keel, salvoes and broadsides of frighteningly accurate words.  And woe to the opposing force, smashed, shattered and sunk by the withering fire.

Unlike The Arizona, the Dreadnaught Squadron which has been yours and Connie’s works are not vanquished, nor lost beneath the tempest by waves too great to bear.

Though bearing the scars and welded repairs of a skirmish with this blog or that corporation, the end is now honorable, the mission performed, and that with a style and class that would have done Farragut proud.

We all gather ‘round now to salute what is, what was, and to respectfully, and yes, sadly, retire the colors from the yard.  Long may it wave.

We’re not letting you off to the breakers, you two.  We’re just seeing you into the Mothball Fleet, resting till such time as either the rusty cycle of life finally prevails, or should the crisis come, to tear away the battens, relight the boilers and stand yet again out to sea, to battle the darkness.

All prose aside, I wish also, among the many, to thank you for your years of honorable service to us all, to our Nation and to Freedom.  I’ve learned not just a lot, but an incredible lot, here.  Both from you and Connie, as well as from countless of your commentors.  Not a few of whom I now count as friends, and proudly so.

You didn’t just build a blog here.  You built a Nation of Riflemen.

And of that, you can be rightly proud, and ought be so.

Kim, Connie, from the bottom of my heart.

    Thank you.  Godspeed.

  63. Of all comments above, I can only say “Dittos”.  If you continue your travels in Europe, specifically Southern Germany, may I suggest the following hotel in the tiny community of Wiechs, a stones throw from the small town of Schopfheim, 10 kilmeters North of the slightly larger community of Rheinfelden at the Swiss Boarder.  My sweet Doris and I spent a wonderful week with this family owned and operated gem, just on the edge of the Black Forest.

  68. Although I’ll now have to find a new site to open first thing each morning, I totally understand your actions and the reasons for taking them.  I don’t understand how you have been able to maintain this enterprise so well and for so long.  Please accept my compliments for a job well-done.

You have inspired me to return to shooting and sporting after a long absence.  That return has been very rewarding, having brought back many wonderful childhood memories that had become dormant.  Your writings have caused me to be more reflective on my values and how they relate to our culture and our country.  That, in turn, has made me more observant and more critical of the governmental process.  It has also made me become more prepared for any eventualities that may occur.

After reading some of your entries, I found myself looking for more similar sites to satisfy my curiosity.  Many of your linked sites have also become daily fare for my surfing.  I feel that my awareness of what is taking place in our country and the world has been vastly improved by this searching of which your site has been my gateway.

Thank you, Kim.  I wish you and your wonderful family good fortune in all your future endeavors.

Thank you for years of insight, humor and just plain common sense.  I’ll miss my daily adventure to the land of Kim’s thoughts, but you deserve the private time that will come with the decision you’ve made.  Best of luck in your retirement, and if we can mention Bob Hope along with Carson “Thanks for the memories...”

  75. I will miss this enclave of civility and rational thought very much indeed.  I thank you for all that you have both written over the years; many of your essays and articles have been printed out, and used by myself & others here as teaching materials for our children - usually in regard to moral & civil behaviour.  I most especially thank you for your kind words of support & advice when my wife & I were having some difficulty with our dyslexic son and his school work.

I can understand your wish to retire from the huge commitment and cost of daily blogging of this quality; I hope that the site itself may continue to be available as a reference work for those with the wit to appreciate its value.

I hope you and Connie enjoy the future together, and that good health and fortune be with you and your family along the way.

Though we only met once, we are truly kindred spirits.

I’ll see you on the rampart, sir, if only figuratively.

Edit Hmm. Inartfully worded, seeing as how we are within a couple years in age. You are not an “old friend”, but it feels as if we have been friends since childhood. After passing the half century mark a couple years ago, I find myself increasingly irritated by the word “old”. wink

There is a qoute from “Pilgrim’s Progress” that I think appropriate.

Now it’s OUR turn to take up the sword and carry the fight to the foes of Freedom.

Well done.  Enjoy retirement and live life to the fullest.

If I may quote Sir Winston Churchill:  “All great things are simple, and many can be expressed in single words: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope.” Two who have carried the torch so ably and are worthy of our praise and honor: Kim and Connie.  Raise your glasses high and don’t slosh the single malt!

  114. Kim, and Connie.

I know that hundreds, maybe thousands, of people have read articles from your web sites, and you have provided inspiration, guidance, and incentive for us to grow and to seek more information on a wide variety of subjects, not limited to, as one person said “politics, guns, and women.”

I personally have enjoyed your insight into big business, had my thoughts provoked about SHTF situations that I will probably never encounter, but should be prepared for, and have used some of your articles (particularly the “pussification” article) as points of discussion when dealing with friends, family, co-workers, and others.

While I haven’t always agreed with your views, you have always made your case in such a way that I understand why you think the way you think, and I respect that.

One of my biggest regrets is that I did not find (and sign up for) your web site earlier that I did—while I have gone back to browse some of your older articles, I still feel that I missed a great deal by not viewing them as you wrote them, so that I could better relate them to the events of the day.

I also know that with so many best wishes, mine might fall through the cracks.  So be it, but I had to say them.

I do ask that, if at some point in the future, you decide to re-establish your on-line-presence, please let me know.  I’m sure that the rest of the folks on this board feel the same way.  This also applies to any books or other publications that you do.

In the mean time, I’m sure that whenever I think of subjects that you’ve talked about, I will definitely find myself thinking “How would Kim deal with this”.

  119. Kim & Connie,

This is almost surreal, tapping out what is to be my last comment on this site. I never commented much, or talked on the forums, but this website came around at just the right time. I found it when I was young & dumb, all of 18 years old. You’ve truly helped shape my outlook on the world, and even helped to convince my wife that voting for John Kerry was a mistake! We both held our noses and voted for McMaverick this year, for all the good it did. Please enjoy your retirement, and know that you have affected more lives, more deeply, then you will ever know.

I feel today much like I did when I was a kid and found out that Gary Larson was retiring, another great fixture of my daily life at the time that was being taken away by forces beyond my control… At least I get to say good bye to you two. And now, with a heavy heart, I move the bookmark to your sites from my “Daily” folder to my “Useful Information” folder. May the Flying Spaghetti Monster watch over you & yours, and hold you close in his noodly appendages.

  123. Thank you for sharing your thoughts over the years.  This blog has been my first stop every morning since I discovered it in 2003.  Your humor (and your justified outrage) will be dearly missed.  And I fear your selfless pursuit of this blog, despite the harm it did your career, and your decision to bear the full burden of its expenses, despite serious financial woes, have created a debt I can never fully repay.

The best I can do is to carry on with what you’ve already inspired me to do.  In the last three years, I’ve taught over 30 people how to shoot.  I will continue dragging them, kicking and screaming, “out of their comfort zones"---to paraphrase (with much sarcasm) our future first lady, and down to the gun range.  As a law student, a resident of Austin, and a future lawyer, I have no doubt that I will spend most of my life in one liberal vipers’ nest or another.  The good news is, I will always be surrounded by people who are ripe for conversion.  Every time the scales fall from their eyes, all credit is due to you.  I have faith that, one person at a time, we can indeed bring a majority of the country back to reason and self-reliance.

  125. As part of your oath of citizenship reads “that I will perform work of national importance”,and “that I will defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies; foreign and domestic” we, your loyal readers will attest to the fact that you have indeed lived up to your oath of an American by Choice™.  Because of you and your website, I have returned to the fold of the brotherhood (& sisterhood) of responsible shooters.  I have brought my wife and two children into the fold as well. Please consider them your grandchildren in the Nation of Riflemen.  I salute you with raised sword on your departure.  Please know that by your efforts here, that you have left a legacy that will be an enduring testimony to your love of freedom.

  126. Thank you, Kim and Connie, for a job very well done. Thank you for providing me with an excellent (and humorous) vocabulary when I was recovering from being a liberal and didn’t know yet how to express it. Thank you for calling attention to the strengths of the American nation and giving them their proper due. Thank you for showing us these things, not only through your writing, but through the way you conducted your affairs. Thank you for showing us, even if just a smattering, of what it means to be civilized, and what it means to secure to ourselves and enjoy the fruits of our civilization.

Kim, I’ll envy my father, who had the chance to meet you when I could not (for his biography), as I’ll envy those who could make it to your 9/11 gatherings when I could not, just as I’ll envy those who have had a chance to shoot with you. Eventually, I will join the Nation of Riflemen with my arms, instead of just my heart- I hope your gout won’t be so bad as to allow me at least a few steps of a jolly jig on that day, if not a full blown happy dance! If so, Rx=Indomethacin!

Connie, I thank you especially for what you’ve written on education and childrearing. More than once you’ve settled my fears and reassured me my wife and I are on the right path with our sons. The rest of what you’ve shared with us cannot be overestimated, though, and your penetrating insight will be sorely missed.

Farewell, Connie and Kim. Like your insight, you will be sorely missed. All the best to you and yours, Godspeed, and may the road rise to meet you…

    Go in peace.

Thank you for sharing your love of guns, women, far away places, and cars.  Thank you for your wit and wisdom.  If you happen to surface somewhere, some time in the future, I hope to stumble upon your new site as I did this one.

Like others, if I’m in the DFW area, I’ll hope to bump into you and be able to shake your hand.

  129. In the birth-labor of our great nation, no citizen was ever asked to give more than their share to the cause.  Yet still, some did.  They gave what they could, then found the will, the strength, to give even more.

Kim, you and your lovely wife have given so much more to those of us who followed your writings.  You never asked it, but you allowed us to set you up as a leader, for a while, and we willingly followed.

Thank you for your contributions to out Conservative effort.  It will always be one of the more brilliant lights in our “shining city on the hill.”

We will miss our daily meetings with you, but we have no fear that even now there is someone setting up their blog, dusting off their keyboard, and beginning to compose the first words which will take up the banner for the next protion of our common journey.

Thank you for your efforts, Friend.  They have not been in vain.

You and your wife have done a yeoman’s job over the years.  I add my voice to those that have already been raised in gratitude for the insight and advice you have provided.  You have been consistently reliable and I have referred to you often in my own postings on various subjects.  Your voices will be missed, but not forgotten.

And now the orator, his words spoken, steps back from the podium.  As he exits the stage, the audience rises in thunderous applause.  Bravo, sir, bravo!

“So long and thanks for all the fish.”

No, that is not enough, let me un-sum up.

Your council has been much appreciated by this 50 plus ADD fellow.  You have managed to put into words and more importantly a line of reasoning, that which I knew was there but could not quite grasp and articulate.

I shall miss those words and your wit, but enough is enough.

I hope that the family room is warm and filled with laughter and family.

  137. I remember stumbling across your blog roughly five years ago. Your political commentary (although not in agreement with my views all the time) and the aspects of gun ownership is what kept me coming back for more. I’d say that it’d played a big part in my development as a staunch gun rights advocate, along with the political discourse and philosophy that goes along with it. Thank you for your contribution Kim and farewell. I hope you and Connie get to finally relax and not stress about keeping up a blogging hobby that had a habit of turning into work.

  154. Well, there’s nothing I can say that hasn’t already been said better by everyone else. Thanks for all the funny and informative posts over the years. Because of your advice, I bought a Yugoslav Mauser and instantly fell in love. Thank you for that! In part because of your encouragement, I’ve introduced several people to the sport of shooting, completely reversing their previous fear of guns.

Like many others, this was the first site I’d check every day, and it’s going to take a while to figure out how to manage.

Thanks for everything (especially the Mauser!), and Semper Fi!

You and Connie have given us news, education, entertainment, enlightenment, shared laughs and sorrows, encouragement and a travelogue, all delightfully presented with a style that reads easily but has a good smattering of five dollar words to keep us from becoming too lazy.  I haven’t said much here, but I made it a point to make time every day to stop by and chew on your thoughts.

  161. After all these years I guess it was finally time to delurk. Kim and Connie, it has been a pleasure reading you over the years. Connie, your post about your son and the struggles you had was very helpful. Our son has similar(though not as severe) problems. It helped my wife a lot to read about someone who had made it through much worse circumstances.

Odd as it may seem for a Marine vet, I was somewhat ambivalent about bringing a gun into my home. Thank you, Kim, for reminding me that it is my duty to protect my family. The guy was right who said that sometimes it is our duty to state the obvious. I’m well on my way toward a proper gun collection and ammo stockpile.

    Thank you and Godspeed.

“This is how the world ends. Swallowed in fire, but not in darkness. You will live on, the voice of all our ancestors, the voice of our fathers and our mothers to the last generation. We created the world we think you would have wished for us, and now we leave the cradle for the last time.” - Babylon 5, “The Deconstruction of Falling Stars”

“Five-card stud, nothing wild, and the sky’s the limit.” - Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Star Trek: The Next Generation, “All Good Things...”

And now, it’s time for us to create our own future.

  190. My sincere thanks for keeping TOS going for as long as you could.  It’s hard to believe I’m reading the final posts from you and Tech Support/Mrs. Du Toit.  This site has been on my daily read list for so long, I know there’s going to be a big hole in my morning routine from now on!

Best wishes for you and the family in your future endeavours, and I hope that you and Connie will fare well.

    Buena suerte!

  193. Kim,

You and Connie have changed the way I view the world and helped me form opinions on a great many subjects. You’ve quite literally changed my life over the last several years, and I will miss this blog terribly. I feel like I know you and can call you a friend through your writings alone, and watching a friend ride off into the sunset isn’t an easy thing.

I’ll miss you guys, and I’ll raise a glass of scotch in your honor tonight and wish you and your family all the best. . Thank you so much, for everything.

  195. Kim,

I have been a faithful reader of your sites for over 5 years, and while there will be a hole in my life, I want to thank you. I have been touched in many ways by your words and have learned more than I thought possible. You and Connie have been inspirational and have lead me down the conservative path quite a ways. While not always eye-to-eye on everything your arguments where always sound. I can honestly say I am a better person for having found your site. While we are not close friends, I still consider you a friend and hope we can find a time soon where we can sit and enjoy a scotch together and discuss our trips to Europa together.

When I first found your site I only had a 10/22 and not even in my house. Today I own more than 15 firearms, and a large part of that is because your reawakened the fire in me. I also know more about our founding now then before you. You have provided many thought provoking commentaries that have driven me to further understandings of our great land. For that I will always be indebted. Thanks again, you have been my bard for over half a decade, and will continue to inspire for a lifetime. I hope to talk to you again soon my friend.

  197. Farewell, friends! The sails are set,
the wind is east, the moorings fret.
    Shadows long before me lie,
    beneath the ever-bending sky,
but islands lie behind the Sun
    that i shall raise ere all is done;
lands there are to west of West,
where night is quiet and sleep is rest.

Farewell my friends and God Bless.

Fraturnity, fidelity and humility, all hallmarks of leadership, and all found here.  How rare and precious they are, and how, selfishly, I will miss your words of wisdom.

  199. Dear Kim,
Thank you so much for all your work over the last few years.
I have enjoyed you musings and links and learnt a great deal.
    Particularly the Weekend Ladies.
You were also kind enough to provide me with the address of some gun ranges in the Florida area allowing this Brit domiciled Irishman to actually do some shooting the last few times I have been across the pond.
Stay well, stay happy and stay on target.

    Jim Braiden.
PS-OK I have to admit it. On my first trip to the firing range I tried a variety of revolvers and automatics but in the end the one I really liked.........mumblemumble was the Glock.
But apart from that I really am a nice guy.

  204. Kim, I’m not sure how I found your blog in the first place; it was either through Frank J. or Misha when I first installed the StumbleUpon plugin and was introduced to the conservative blogosphere from this corner.

Your and Connie’s blogs will join the ranks of the Honored Discontinued in my bookmarks folder, alongside the Religious Policeman and Cox & Forkum Cartoons.

I’m sure there will come a time, perhaps as soon as a few months after you complete your travels in Europe, when there will be a temptation to resume the blog.  There might be a number of plausibly good reasons: a rainy night with nothing watchable on TV, a small wad of raw essay material accumulating on the hard drive, whatever.  You always seemed like a man of your word, which is why I don’t expect any amount of pleading or coercion will work to change your mind in closing the lid on this blog— indeed, I beg you not to resume if you do in fact believe that it is important that you stick to this.

If, however, there is even the slightest doubt in your mind about this— if the matter, of feeling like you’ve said just about everything you really can, is something that might be reversed by some eventual change in the world’s circumstances, consider the following recommendation.

Set your conditions now, on what it would take to resume.  Write them down for yourself; it is not necessary to tell anyone. Modify that list from time to time, if necessary, so long as you can honestly say to yourself you’re not trying to cheat yourself into returning to blogging sooner. Read that list whenever you start thinking about blogging, and start no sooner than when you have decided when you will be ready.  If that day never comes, so be it.

For now, good night, and farewell.

  205. Well damn.

Now I’ll have to find someone else to read every morning that shares my view that half the politicians in D.C. should be jailed, one-eighth horsewhipped, one-eighth hanged from a stout tree, and the remainder put to work repealing all of the legislation that doesn’t pass the “enumerated powers” test.

I guess I’ll just say “Fair Winds and Following Seas” to you at this point.

Good luck, you cranky old bastard. wink

  207. Kim,
It is not an exaggeration to say you and Connie have had a huge positive influence on the way I think about everything that is important to me, especially the right to keep and bear arms. I suppose in this way you’ve influenced my whole life. When I found this site, I was a cynical bastard. Well, now I’m even more of one, and I owe it to you. Your daily blogging and GGPs led me to purchase my first two guns: a 10/22 and an SMLE.

Thanks for the humor and blogging, the essays and weekend women. Thanks for everything. I will miss your daily entries terribly. It’s good to know that I’m not the only one who will. I wish the best for you and yours.

  251. im here to put my farewells with the rest.  you were one of the biggest shapers of my life growing up, and the things you focus on in this website have changed me into the man i will be some day.  i signed on because i was a kid who liked guns and shooting, i now can appreciate the guns, the cars, the women, and the sheer, pure emotions you pour into your writing, whether it be outrage against the slow degredation of the world or the joy at people learning to fight back at both tyranny and stupidity.

Your essay, Pussification of the Western Male is probably my favorite essay i have ever read in my life, for both its point and its brutal sincerity.  i have it saved and backed up on my hard drive so it will never be forgotten.

youve helped bring me up, and this is a sad day for me.  i hope to share your ideals with a wider base.  you did a great job, youre a great man, and enjoy your life as best you can.

may every deity that may or may not exist bless you and your family.  I have a feeling that the tantric left handed buddhist deity will suit you best with his blessing.

Please accept my most sincere thanks for sharing yourself with us over the years. I’ve enjoyed it. I’ll miss you, most assuredly, but all good things must, sadly, come to an end. You and yours have my best wishes for successful and fulfilling lives. I hope, as an earlier poster also said, that you’ll check in once every so often to let us know how you are doing.

Though we never met, I started each day with you, and a bowl of cereal, or a couple of eggs and toast.  I ended most days with you over a cup of tea or a gin and tonic.  Your retirement is a bitter/sweet thing for me.  I’ll miss you dearly every day but, I’m so very happy to know that you’re moving on to the next chapter of your lives.  You deserve it more than you know.  You’ve been a daily part of my life for a long time and you will be missed.

Know that your contribution to this community mattered - a lot, and that you changed many people’s lives for the better - including mine.

I hope that someday our paths will cross and we can meet in person.  Until that day, I wish you both the best and bid you a fond farewell.

    With heartfelt thanks,

  255. I’m kind of at a loss here.

I’ve been reading Kim’s and Connie’s offerings for several years.  Kim’s has been the first site I’ve checked in the morning, and the last before retiring for the evening, for as long as I care to remember.

I’ve known of their impending retirement for some time now, but have said nothing - perhaps, I guess, because I haven’t really believed that it would happen.  Not that I didn’t think that they were sincere in the announcement and reminders of this, mind you - rather, I just didn’t want to accept it.  I’ve been pushing the reality of this day back and down into the cellar of my mind, every time I’ve been reminded of it.

Till now.  Now, I have to deal with it.  Dammit!

But here we are, and I’ve got to put my brave face on.  I don’t have to like it, though.

Thank you, Kim.  Thank you, Connie.  And the very, very best to you and yours.

  256. Kim & Connie;

I found you a few months before the Pussification rant and have been reading ever since. It sounds silly now, but the incredible sense of relief I felt when reading your posts to let me know I wasn’t the only one helped me to deal with a lot of problems I was having at the time. I was 18 years old, studying at University and felt like I was the only conservative on campus. Some of your posts helped me to become more confident in my own beliefs and to stand up to obnoxious lefties on the campus and in class, which in time brought me a close circle of friends who were also conservatives trying to keep their heads down and survive the class!

They of course also became readers of this website and more vocal in their beliefs! You don’t know what you have started Kim cheese

There was never really any need for me to post before this, I largely agreed with everything you said so never saw any point in turning your comments page into an echo chamber; add this to the fact I live in the British People’s Soviet and so could add nothing to your discussions on guns, so I never registered.

I have registered now just so that I could write this post thanking you for everything you have written on this site, in particular Kim’s many posts about gentlemanly behavior which helped me to realize what kind of person I was at the time and more importantly, what type of man I wanted to be instead.

So thank you Kim & Connie, for everything you don’t know that you have done for me and my friends. I wish you many, many happy years together and with your children.

  259. Kim & Connie,

Well, you said you were gonna do it, and now you’ve gone and dunnit!  The mark of a man (and woman) who know their own minds, say I.  wink

I see from my bookmarks file that I added Kim’s site back in May of 2002, and The Mrs. in 2003.  Even though I didn’t get to either as often as I would have liked, it’s always been reassuring to know that you were there, fighting the good fight.  To say you’ll be missed is inadequate.

Enjoy your time away, and go with my deepest thanks.

  260. Thanks for all the great essays. I think, however, you will find other things to talk about, like Den Beste. Writing is a calling. You can refuse to do it all you want, but you can’t escape the call. And why should you? There will always be those who appreciate what you do.

  261. To the DuToits:

As we enter into another time of uncertainty in America, I am equally sad yet heartened.  Your well-thought-out positions on the use of force gave me the will to defend myself and others.  Many websites talk about guns as objects, but you put people in the mindset of being an armed individual.

Gun facts alone do not win the hearts and minds of the uncommitted GFW.

Your insights have made the world a far less scary place for myself and I am sure many others.  No longer fearing the random actions of criminals due to a prepared state of mind and armament is a blessing which has no price.

Your worldly-wise and well reasoned writings have done much to educate and enlighten and will be sorely missed.  Now I stand facing uncertainty without fear - because this time I will be ready, and I know I am ready.

Thank you, and know that the torch of knowledge will be passed on.  A good idea can’t be kept down

  263. In my bloglife, I’ve always been most proud of your inclusion of me as another angry bastard with a gun.  Your page was a daily (multiple visit) read for me.  Hoping our paths cross again!

Best of luck on your future endeavors Kim and Connie and hope life treats you and your families well!

  264. Kim & Connie,
Although I’ve read your words nearly every day for over four years I’ve rarely commented.
There’s always at least several that say whatever is needed, and of course even in this case many already have.
I just want you both to know what a pleasure it’s been to know your thoughts on so many topics. You will truly be missed.
    Enjoy your “retirement"…

  265. You have been a daily read for a long time even though I have never said much in the comments. Too many posts above me say all the things I am thinking better than I can say them. All I have left is a heartfelt “Thank You” from one Texan to another. Thank you Kim (and the Mrs.) for all of your words over the years. Godspeed.

  266. I’ve read your website at least twice a day for the last four years, and while I will miss your words, I understand completely the effort that goes into producing so many high quality essays and mini essays on a daily basis. That is the amazing and impressive accomplishment. It is easy for us to come here and make comments, but you selected the subjects we, the peanut gallery commented on.  For the sheer volume of high quality, thought provoking writing, I thank and salute you.
    Enjoy your retirement.
Who knows, if all goes well, we may meet trudging up the hill to Salzburg castle or while waiting for a telephone at the Paris office of the American Express.
    Godspeed~

  268. Kim and Connie,

Ciao bella.  You both have caused many to pause, to think and to see - both events timely and ideas timeless.  I shall always be grateful for the effort and thought you put into all these posts, and the websites that held them.  My life has changed, and I am a better father, husband, and citizen because of your writings.  Kim - you are far more of an American than most of our native-born, and your writings will go down as some of the most insightful and influential conservative commentary of our time.  Thanks for carrying the flag as long and as well as you did.  Enjoy your travels, and may your lives be long, prosperous and happy.

    Arrivederci,
    Luigi

P.S.  If you’re ever in NH or Boston and want to stop in or need a hand, just ask.
P.P.S I hope to get down to TX and meet you and the Mrs. some day.  The range is on me!

  270. Kim and Connie,

Many have said it better, but you’ll be sorely missed. You’ve made me laugh out loud, want to break things, and roll my eyes at the weekend women, but you’ve always been entertaining and full of heart. Thanks, Kim, for the instruction and the milkshake! Now 4 guns later and a brand new, spankin’ CHL, I’ll never worry about being alone again because I am prepared, in part thanks to you. Enjoy your upcoming vacation, and I hope you get much enjoyment out of life. Thanks,

  271. Thank you both for all your time and effort, and for all the thought provoking articles and pointers.  I’ve never had the gift for words that would have made it fruitful for me to start my own blog or other publication, nor to appropriately express my feelings (sad) or gratitude (immense) here, as so many others have above.

    Have wonderful lives.

  272. Kim,

As so many others have said, your writings (and those of Mrs. D) have meant a lot to me.  Yours was the first blog I ever started reading on a daily basis.  I want to wish you and your family the very best in life, and I hope I get to meet all of you one day.

As illuminating as your writings and recollections have been, one of the things I’ve enjoyed most were your photos of Europe, especially the ones of ordinary streets and markets.

Will all this be archived somewhere?  How long will we be able to read your essays?  I’m especially concerned about Mrs. D’s writings, since I haven’t been able to keep up on them.

Goodbye is not my favorite word, Kim, so Shalom Alechem, du Toits, and I hope to see you again.

  275. Last thoughts before the door closes:
    - Kim, Connie, I think that, if your children ever point-blank asked you who influenced you and your thinking, your reply was probably Albert Jay Nock. I think both of you have said that at some point in your years of writing. Please understand this, when the day comes that my child asks me that question, my answer will be (among others) “Kim and Connie du Toit.” He’s just three, so I think it will be a while before we have that conversation, but when we do, I hope to be able to point him to your archives. He’ll read, and I’ll provide context - what was going on at the time each post was written (best I can remember), and what I was thinking at the time. I hope by pointing that out, that you see my meaning when I say I treasure the two of you. Dear, remarkable friends that I will likely never meet.

    - All good things must come to an end. As bad as I hate to see you go (and I have been out of sorts all day today), I think that we, as humans, do not appreciate what we have unless it has an end. The peace I have reached with this is that it has caused me to stop and reflect on just how much it has meant to me to be allowed to sit on your porch all these years, laughing, crying, shouting in both glee and rage and - best of all - learning. There would never be a day when we, your fans, were ready for this to come to an end. But in its ending, we learn and reflect on why it was valuable to us in the first place. I am thankful for our time together, such that it was.

If you ever come to the decision - for whatever reason - that it is time to dismantle these sites, I hope you will seek a permanent solution that allows them to stay archived, somewhere, for posterity. For these archives to disappear forever into the ether would be equivalent to my mind of Nock’s manuscripts being lost in a fire before they were ever published - such is the limitation of this medium. That, to me, would be a tragedy. I volunteer whatever help you need. Today, tomorrow or 10 years hence.

    Thank you for the memories.
    Joe

  276. Kim,

    Thank you.

Thank you for getting me interested in putting to electrons my daily thoughts while deployed, and for your insights.

Thank you for getting me through the emotional numbness from killing a human being. It not only got me through killing others when I had to, but helped me help others cope with that same feeling.

Thank you for sticking by me through recovery and helping me get back on my feet, and keyboard.

Thank you for being a mentor and sounding board.

Finally, thank you all of the work, thought, and devotion you’ve put into this site, the NoR, and the first site of KimDuToit.

Now, go off into that wilderness and see the world beyond the keyboard… and everytime you think in terms of blogging an experience, just smile, and know that you’ve given so many of us the keys, but we need to open those doors for ourselves.

May the road rise up to meet you, and when we finally meet at fiddler’s green, I’ll pull you in with my membership card and the rounds are all on me.

  278. Tonight the lights go off and the doors will close. Our Inn Keeper and his precious spouse will begin a new chapter in their lives. As a daily guest of the gracious du Toit family we have enjoyed libations of tonic and wit for our soul. And much food for thought has been consumed. It appears that for some, Kim’s impending retirement launched a journey through the Elizabeth Kubler-Ross 5 Stages. I am happy to say that I have reached Stage 5. Acceptance. As Sigmund Freud wrote “We find a place for what we lose. Although we know that after such a loss the acute stage of mourning will subside, we also know that we shall remain inconsolable and will never find a substitute. No matter what may fill the gap, even if it be filled completely, it nevertheless remains something else”. Yes, there will eventually be ‘something else’, but for what has been and for your hospitality, I am truly grateful.

  279. I’ve said most of my goodbye in threads from previous days, so this is short.

You will be missed.  Thanks you for the years of writing and thank you for being willing to leave your archives accessible to us now that you’ve given it up.

I joined late, read often, enjoyed most of it, and was shaped by thinking about what you have said.  In the past year, I have gone from owning no firearms to having a safe full of carefully selected guns, a comfortable amount of ammo for them, and being a beginning reloader, thanks to you and others you have pointed out along the way.  My wife, who is from a country where individuals can’t be armed, has been going shooting with me as well.

Here’s to success in your future endeavors and to the health of your family. Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. du Toit.

    With my regards,

    Charles

  282. Kim and Connie,

Thank you is such an inadequate phrase.  but tis the best one that I have for all that you have done.

I’m a far more ACTIVE gunowner and working to grow the legion.  Tonight I guided a young man onto his first deer, taken at 65 yards with a muzzleloader.

to recap what was said above..and I cannot say it any better: Kim is the embodiment of the truth that some our finest citizens weren’t born here, thus reinforcing that “America” and being an “American” is not about a place of residence or accident of birth, but about ideals and a concept of how civilized people can, and should, live together.

Fair winds and following seas to you all.

    Best wishes,

    Thank you!

TS for keeping things up and running...and the stunningly insightfull writings that have changed my thinking for the better.

    I’m indebted to you both.

    Farewell and best wishes.

  284. One day long ago I googled (altavista-ed, actually) FN-FAL.  That got me to the GGPs.  I bookmarked the site of the Saeth Effrican American with the beret.  Soon I was hooked.

Influence is a funny thing.  You had a blog.  So do millions of others.  But your influence has helped many people in the U.S. and elsewhere.  It’s viral.  A formerly lapsed shooter, I now shoot regularly and, more significantly, introduce others to shooting.  This has been repeated probably thousands of times across your reader base, certainly many more times than you could possibly be aware of.

Your individual actions, with the indispensable help of your wife, have had a significant positive influence on thousands of Americans.  Talk about stepping up to the plate!

If more immigrants were like you we wouldn’t have our present problems.

Thank you.  Others will carry on now.

Enjoy your retirement.  You’ve earned it.

Hope to hear from you at the gun counter.
