One Less

June 26, 2006
12:07 PM CST

Seems as though Acidman has passed away. No details, but apparently it wasn’t suicide or anything like that.

Bugger.

I was always pestering him to come and visit us, but he never did—he was either in rehab or in too much pain, or else jumping whores in Costa Rica (which is how I’ll remember him, the horny-toad Cracker bastard).

The world will definitely be a less-interesting place from now on…

R.I.P., Rob. I’ll have a drink to your memory tonight.

I’ll let Kevin Baker have the last word:

Rest in peace, Acidman. If there’s an afterlife, I hope yours is a lot like Costa Rica, with sweet nubile women, a working Roscoe, and all the good food, good beer, and good company you could ever want. You will be sorely missed.

Amen to all that.

  1. Oh, bugger.  Rob used to drop by The Safety Valve and post ascerbic comments, usually at the expense of other commenters, but he wasn’t afraid of having a go at me. either.  I never minded because he was always amusing and it was refreshing to hear from someone who Just Didn’t Give A Shit and said whatever he liked.
I quit going to Gut Rumbles for a while when he was spinning out of control, it was just too painful.  But it had been going well recently....
    Damn.

  2. In a recent post on his blog, he completely spun out of control and even threatened suicide. Never met the guy. I shared enjoyment of John Prine music with him. May he rest in peace.

  3. Loved reading his column - a fine wit and an honest writing style.  Was one of my daily reads. He was quite obviously in great pain and he could find no respite. My condolences to his family - he will be missed.

  4. Rob may have talked about ending it all, but he never would have done it. He was too much a fighter for that.

We lost a great guy, and that’s a damn shame.

  5. A sad loss…

  6. As I said in comments to Sam:
    Damn!  Just damn!

Rob (not THE Rob, never THE Rob)

  7. Ditto:  Just DAMN.  I had hoped he would last long enough to see his kid graduate college.  Damn.
The worlds longest lasting train wreck is now over.

  9. There are no words…

Grandma Smith, please show him the ropes up there.  Just so he knows what rules he will be breaking.

  10. I’m stunned. I’ll never forget the time he tried to flame me and let loose his flying monkeys on me in his comments. What they never knew was that we made up about halfway through the fight, and both of us were having a right laugh.
I never met him, but I’ll miss him
At least he’s out of pain now.

And Gods help him if he meets my mother up there…

  11. Reminded me of the me I pictured myself to be but never seemed to be able to pull off.

  12. From Rob I learned the subtle but important difference (in the South) between “grilling” and “barbecuing.”

“Barbeque” is a food group, like “caesar salad.”

    “Grill” is a cooking method/surface.

    As in:

You cook BBQ on a grill or in a smoker, or even in the oven.

If you are a Yankee, however, none of the above applies.

  13. I just saw the following on his website:

    Rob’s Memorial Service

Rob’s brother Dave has posted in the comments about the arrangements for Rob’s Memorial Service:

This is Dave, Rob’s brother. I just wanted to let somebody know that the arrangements have finally been made. If somebody has the ability to get the word out, please go for it.

There will be a memorial service for Rob at 4 pm on Thursday, June 29th, at Fox & Weeks on Hodgson Memorial Drive in Savannah, followed by an after-service celebration (can’t be a wake if it’s after the Memorial) at our parents’ house. Pickers will bring instruments, everybody else bring voices and any Rob stories you can tell for everybody else to hear while they lift a glass to him. I’m going to miss my big brother, but I’ll do my best to send him off in style! There’ll be directions to the place at the service, or you can email me: dsmith [at] brannenlaw [dot] com. Thanks, everybody!

Arrangements are also being worked out for a way for those of us on the web to participate in the memorial for Rob as well. Details will be available in the next 12 hours or so.
