Quote Of The Day

July 20, 2006
7:30 AM CST

From Rusty Shackleford:

“A nation cannot truly have freedom of religion if that religion is immune from public criticism. A nation cannot truly have freedom of speech if blasphemy becomes a criminal act.”

Well, yes. Now go and read the context.

I try not to offend people about religion—it’s an extraordinarily touchy subject, of course—but Islam’s Offense Meter seems to operate on a hair-trigger, if I may mix a couple of metaphors.

Screw ‘em if they can’t take a joke.

Update: Looks like the Indian government has backed down:

The Indian government told the country’s Internet-service providers to cease blocking popular sites full of Web logs after attempts to restrict access to the sites spurred protests from the online community.

The real question, of course, is why the IndianGov stuck their fat statist nose into the Internet in the first place.

  1. I would like to both agree and complioment you on your usual care on the issue of religion.  With a very few rare exceptions, you do an admirabl job of letting people know where you stand on the subject, even to the point of thinking various religions to be silly and unjustified, without insulting anyone (though some, of course, manage to tak insult merely from your not “validating thir belief”, or some other stupid thing like that).

And the article was good, too.

  2. As Bill Maher said, “Somebody needs to do Chris Rock’s act for Muslims.”

  3. Better, the wahabbis need to have done unto them what certain muslim sects did unto the assassins.  T’wer better done in house, but I’m not holding my breath.
